Vape Pen Diluent Safety

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 138

The safety concerns around substances used to thin cannabis concentrates for use in vape pen cartridges. Glycol-based diluents, commonly used to reduce the viscosity of THC distillate, can thermally degrade at vaping temperatures to produce toxic and carcinogenic byproducts.

Skunkman Sam and others discussed a scientific paper showing glycols produce acrolein (a known carcinogen) when thermally degraded in vape pens. The cannabis community debated alternatives: terpene-based thinning was suggested as potentially safer than glycol-based diluents. The discussion highlighted the lack of safety testing in the rapidly growing vape pen market.
