Glycol Diluent Thermal Degradation

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 138

The chemical process by which glycol-based diluents (propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol) commonly used in vape pens and e-cigarettes thermally decompose at high temperatures to produce toxic compounds including acrolein, a known carcinogen that is extremely reactive and dangerous when inhaled.

A February 2017 paper was discussed showing that glycols used in vape pens and the e-cigarette industry thermally degrade into carcinogenic compounds. Compound #5 in the paper (acrolein) was specifically highlighted. This was presented as a major safety concern for anyone using or producing vape pen products with glycol diluents. Skunkman Sam noted he wasn't surprised, having been skeptical of these products from the start.
