Trichome Gland Integrity

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 210

The structural wholeness of detached trichome heads, which determines how well volatile compounds like thiols and terpenes are preserved during post-harvest processing. Intact heads act as sealed vessels of chemistry, while ruptured heads allow volatile loss.

A rich discussion between Dr. Mark, Chimera, Fletch, and Collin Palmer. Dr. Mark described the trichome head as 'a little vessel of chemistry' and theorized that introducing vacuum during freeze drying could cause volatile compounds to 'bust out of the head.' The hydrophobic nature of the resin was discussed as a natural seal - Dr. Mark suggested that in water hash processing, the hydrophobic glands 'seal shut' when exposed to water, preventing terpene loss. Chimera compared the trichome gland to a Wardenclyffe tower broadcasting chemical signals. Collin Palmer raised the Prince Rupert's Drop theory suggesting the shape formed when heads break off the stalk creates structural strength.
