Sesquiterpenes

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 216

A class of terpenes with 15 carbon atoms (three isoprene units), including beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene. They have higher molecular weight and lower volatility than monoterpenes, contributing to deeper, more complex aromatic profiles and persisting longer during curing and storage.

Dr. Mark Scialdone highlighted findings from the Columbia University paper on Whitethorn Rose showing that outdoor cannabis samples had greater preponderance of sesquiterpenes like alpha-humulene and beta-caryophyllene, while monoterpenes were more prevalent in indoor samples. Bubbleman noted that curing hash at room temperature allows sesquiterpene bouquets to develop as volatile monoterpenes fade, creating a fundamentally different and often preferred aromatic experience.
