Monoterpenes

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 217

A class of terpenes with 10 carbon atoms (two isoprene units), including limonene, myrcene, and pinene. They are highly volatile, responsible for the initial pungent aromas of fresh cannabis, and are the primary compounds preserved through cold chain processing.

Bubbleman discussed the trade-off between preserving monoterpenes through cold storage versus allowing them to cure off so sesquiterpene bouquets can emerge. He noted the current market strongly favors 'live' products that preserve these volatile compounds, while decades of hashmaking tradition actually cured them away. The discussion highlighted how the fresh-frozen, live resin era represents a departure from historical hashmaking practices.
