Neuroprotection

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 217

The ability of cannabinoids to protect neurons from damage caused by oxidative stress, glutamate toxicity, and inflammation. Both THC and CBD demonstrate neuroprotective properties through multiple receptor pathways including TRPV1, independent of traditional cannabinoid receptors.

Dr. Mark Scialdone explained that US Patent 6630507 proves cannabinoids protect the brain through antioxidant mechanisms that work independently of CB-1 receptors, acting instead on TRPV1 (the capsaicin receptor) and PPAR-gamma. This is particularly relevant for traumatic brain injury, where a recent study showed veterans can sustain TBI from firing weapons without any physical head wound, merely from the shock wave. Bubbleman and Dr. Mark discussed how cannabis promotes nerve cell growth rather than killing brain cells.
