Endocannabinoid System Education Gap

🩺 Medicine First mentioned: Ep. 216

The systemic failure of medical schools worldwide to teach physicians about the endocannabinoid system (ECS), despite its role as a master regulatory system governing homeostasis. As of the most recent survey, only 13% of US medical schools even mentioned the ECS.

Dr. David Allen described calling 157 US medical schools and finding that only 13% mentioned the endocannabinoid system, with none offering an organized course. He proposed a new study to survey medical schools globally, offering co-authorship to volunteer interns. Allen argued the gap traces back to the 1930s when FBN agents literally had students rip cannabis pages from their textbooks, and continued through DEA intimidation of doctors who risked losing their prescribing licenses.
