Microplaning

๐Ÿ’ง Extraction First mentioned: Ep. 006

A technique for breaking up wet bubble hash using a microplane grater to create fine particles for even drying. After collection from Bubble Bags, wet hash must be dried properly to prevent mould and preserve quality. Microplaning frozen hash creates a large surface area that allows moisture to escape evenly. The hash maker holds frozen peas or ice packs to keep their hands cold during the process.

Microplaning was covered in Episode 6 as part of a broader discussion on hash drying โ€” which Bubbleman later called the number one quality factor (Episode 10). The technique involves freezing freshly collected bubble hash, then grating it with a microplane over parchment paper in a cold room. The frozen peas trick keeps the hash maker's hands cold enough to prevent body heat from melting the hash during handling. The fine particles created by microplaning dry much more evenly than larger chunks, preventing the outside from drying while the inside retains moisture โ€” a condition that leads to mould and degraded quality. Proper drying after microplaning can take 2-3 months.
