Live Sift

๐Ÿ’ง Extraction First mentioned: Ep. 010

The practice of dry sifting fresh frozen cannabis material rather than properly dried and cured material. Marketed as a premium product, live sift is controversial among traditional hash makers who argue it often serves as a marketing shortcut to avoid the lengthy drying process that produces the highest quality dry sift. The frozen material can be more difficult to work with and may not produce the same clarity as patiently dried sift.

Live sift came up in Episode 10 during a discussion about shortcuts in the industry. Bubbleman expressed skepticism about the trend, arguing that many producers use "live" as a marketing term to justify skipping the 2-3 month drying period that properly made dry sift requires. While fresh frozen material preserves terpenes, the panel argued that the drying and curing process itself contributes to the final quality of dry sift โ€” properly dried hash "clicks" when dropped on a hard surface, a test that live sift often fails. The broader point was about patience and craft versus marketing trends: the best dry sift takes months to produce, and there are no shortcuts to that level of quality.
