Carding

💧 Extraction First mentioned: Ep. 005

The technique of gently working cannabis material back and forth across a mesh screen to separate trichome gland heads from plant matter. Named after the textile process of combing fibres. Optimal carding temperature is 3-9°C — cold makes trichome stalks brittle and gland heads snap off cleanly. Working in a cold environment is the single most important factor in producing clean dry sift.

Carding was discussed in Episode 5 alongside the optimal temperature range for dry sift production. The panel was emphatic about cold being non-negotiable: at room temperature, trichome stalks are flexible and bend rather than break, smearing resin instead of releasing clean heads. At 3-9°C, the stalks become brittle and snap cleanly, allowing gland heads to fall through the screen intact. Bubbleman recommended working in a cold room or using frozen material. The texture and motion of carding matters too — it's not about force but about rhythm. Gentle, repeated passes produce better results than aggressive agitation, which pushes contaminant through the screen along with the trichome heads.
