Butenolide Smoke Germination

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 055

A naturally occurring butenolide compound found in wood smoke that stimulates seed germination, part of nature's mechanism to repopulate forests after fire events.

Mark Scialdone raised this in the context of California wildfire effects on outdoor cannabis crops. He speculated whether smoke compounds could be used in a supplementary sense to enhance seed germination. Bubbleman mentioned fireweed as a British Columbia plant that germinates specifically after forest fires. The discussion also covered ash deposits on trichomes, migrating pests from fire-displaced wildlife, and the potential for fire retardant chemicals to contaminate cannabis.
