Transdermal Cannabinoids

๐Ÿฉบ Medicine First mentioned: Ep. 016

Cannabis-infused topical products designed to penetrate the skin barrier and deliver cannabinoids into the bloodstream, as distinct from surface-level topicals that only affect the skin. Transdermal formulations pair cannabis extracts with specific carrier oils โ€” cinnamon for muscle relaxation, lavender for calming, mint for inflammation โ€” to create targeted therapeutic products. A 1:1 THC:CBD ratio with myrcene has been used for skin cancer treatment, applied topically with concentrated alcohol extraction.

Transdermal cannabinoids were discussed in Episode 16 with contributions from Tony Verzura and Mike West. Verzura showed his Prana sublingual drops (P1-P4) and a transdermal balm from United Cannabis, while Mike West from MJ Cana Store described pairing CO2 extract balms with carrier oils for targeted applications. The key distinction from regular topicals is penetration: transdermal products cross the skin barrier to deliver cannabinoids systemically, while surface topicals only affect the local area. West described treating skin cancer with a protocol using 1:1 THC:CBD ratio paired with myrcene, applying concentrated alcohol extraction topically. The discussion highlighted how different delivery methods โ€” sublingual, transdermal, oral, inhaled โ€” produce different onset times, durations, and therapeutic effects.
