THCV

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 017

Tetrahydrocannabivarin — a minor cannabinoid found in trace amounts in certain cannabis strains. Unlike THC which stimulates appetite, THCV is associated with appetite suppression and may play a role in insulin regulation. Early observations suggest THCV addresses specific pain types rather than offering generalised relief — Johnny B reported it helping specifically with back pain but not other pain types. Each cannabinoid's effects appear to have an antagonist counterpart.

THCV received its first detailed discussion in Episode 17. Johnny B shared personal experience of THCV helping with back pain specifically but not gallbladder pain, suggesting cannabinoids may target pain through different mechanisms rather than acting as universal analgesics. Tony Verzura expanded on this, noting the antagonist/antithesis pattern emerging in cannabinoid research — for each cannabinoid that stimulates a function, there appears to be one that suppresses it. The appetite suppression angle makes THCV particularly interesting for patients who need cannabis therapy but want to avoid THC's appetite-stimulating effects.
