Terpene-THC Modulation Experiment

๐Ÿ”ฅ Culture First mentioned: Ep. 175

Skunkman Sam's controlled experiment testing individual terpenes spiked into precisely weighed 25mg doses of 100% pure THC, vaporized in a Volcano. Approximately 15 of the most common cannabis terpenes were tested individually. Results showed some terpenes potentiated the THC effect, more modulated (altered the character of) the effect, and all produced some change compared to pure THC alone โ€” demonstrating that terpenes are not merely aromatic but pharmacologically active.

Sam plans to repeat these experiments with pure thiols (volatile sulfur compounds) to test whether they also contribute to potency or effect modulation. He noted that 100% pure THC does not get you as high as resin from Skunk #1 at only 50-60% THC โ€” the strongest evidence for the entourage/ensemble effect. Sam had access to about 120 reference terpene standards but estimated cannabis contains at least 50+ distinct terpenes, meaning many remain untested. This work directly supports the receptor upregulation hypothesis โ€” that terpenes increase cell membrane fluidity, facilitating cannabinoid receptor expression.
