// Definition
The mechanism by which terpenes increase cannabinoid receptor expression in cells. Terpenes interpolate into the lipid bilayer of cell membranes, increasing flux of substances in and out of cells, which results in upregulation of the cannabinoid receptors responsible for the effects of THC and CBD.
// From the Episode
Mark Scialdone explained that terpenes increase cell membrane fluidity, opening the cell for business. This upregulation is one mechanism underpinning the entourage/ensemble effect and explains why smaller amounts of THC with higher terpene concentrations can produce enhanced effects.
