Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs)

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 052

Synthetic or natural chemicals used to modify plant growth patterns, often to increase bud density and yield in cannabis cultivation. PGRs can be sold separately as supplements or hidden within nutrient product lines, sometimes without clear labeling. Common PGRs include paclobutrazol and daminozide (Alar), which are controversial due to unknown long-term inhalation health effects.

A major safety topic in Ep 052. The panel discussed how PGRs are sold both as standalone products and covertly added to nutrient lines. Mark Scialdone and others raised alarms about mislabeling, noting that some products list only 'algae extract' while containing synthetic PGRs. The concern is amplified when PGR-treated plant material is used for concentrates, as the growth regulators may become concentrated. The panel emphasized that both growers and consumers are often unaware they are using or consuming PGR-affected cannabis.
