Nutrient Contamination

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 052

The presence of unwanted substances (heavy metals, plant growth regulators, or other contaminants) in commercial cannabis nutrient and fertilizer products. These contaminants can be absorbed by cannabis plants during growth and become concentrated in extracts, posing potential health risks to consumers.

A recurring theme in Ep 052. The panel discussed how nutrient companies may include undisclosed PGRs, have histories of heavy metal contamination, or use mislabeled ingredients. Mark Scialdone noted that conversations about nutrient contamination had been ongoing since at least 2012 but the information had not reached most growers. The panel called for consumer awareness and industry accountability, noting the issue becomes more serious as cannabis concentrates amplify any contaminants present in source material.
