Parchment Paper Contamination

๐Ÿ’ง Extraction First mentioned: Ep. 054

The risk of chemical contamination when using parchment paper for rosin pressing. Parchment paper is manufactured using acid-treated, cross-linked cellulose coated with silicone-based polymers (such as Wacker-brand dehesives). Under the high heat and pressure of rosin pressing, volatile compounds from these coatings can transfer into the concentrate.

A major topic in Episode 054, taking up nearly 30 minutes. Mark Scialdone led the scientific discussion, explaining that parchment paper uses a heat-treating process with acid to cross-link fibers, then is coated with silicone-based polymers (Wacker dehesive products). He warned that the intended commercial use of coated papers is not for this type of extraction, and pressure from pneumatic presses combined with heat could cause volatile components to transfer from the parchment into the rosin. The panel also discussed silicone containers absorbing concentrates โ€” one anecdote described 29 containers where oil had leaked into the silicone material.
