Meiosis in Plant Breeding

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 258

The cell division process that creates haploid sex cells (pollen and ova) with one set of chromosomes instead of two. During meiosis, chromosomes randomly redistribute between daughter cells, creating the genetic reshuffling that enables new trait combinations in offspring. Cannabis has 10 chromosome pairs (9 autosomes + 1 sex chromosome pair).

Ryan Lee emphasized this is the most important biological process for breeders to understand. The random recombination during meiosis II is where new trait combinations arise that breeders can then select for.
