HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 221

A laboratory analytical technique that separates, identifies, and quantifies chemical compounds in a liquid mixture by pumping the sample through a column of solid adsorbent material. In cannabis testing, HPLC is the gold standard for measuring cannabinoid and terpene concentrations.

Reuben Valenveras explains that HPLC testing takes approximately 20 minutes per sample plus expensive reagents and trained technicians, limiting throughput to about 30-40 samples per day. He contrasts this with the NIR unit doing 400 samples daily. He notes HPLC will always be necessary for detecting compounds below 100 ppm, but NIR handles routine potency and terpene analysis at a fraction of the cost.
