Hash vs Oil Definition

๐Ÿ’ง Extraction First mentioned: Ep. 053

A taxonomic distinction between hash (mechanically separated trichome resin, using no solvents โ€” only water, air, heat, or pressure) and oil (extracts produced using chemical solvents like butane, propane, ethanol, or CO2). The debate centers on whether rosin, which uses heat and pressure but no solvents, should be classified as hash or oil.

Skunkman Sam provided a definitive take: 'To me it's hashish โ€” no solvents are being used, it's being heated.' He drew a clear line: solvents (butane, propane, ethanol, CO2) make it fundamentally different from hash. He clarified 'water's not a solvent, it's used as a suspension agent, just like air for dry sifting.' On rosin specifically, Sam noted it 'could have been done in the 60s or 70s if you wrapped hash in cellophane and squeezed it hot and hard enough.' Bubbleman largely agreed but noted he considers even rosin to be oil. Sam countered that 'oil melts all the time โ€” there's no melt factor of oil. It's hash that may or may not have a melt factor depending on quality.'
