Elvy Musikka (Federal Patient)

🩺 Medicine First mentioned: Ep. 062

Elvy Musikka was the first woman to receive medical cannabis from the United States federal government, winning her case in the 1980s after suing for 12 years. The government sends her 300 pre-rolled joints per month, grown at the University of Mississippi and processed through Research Triangle Institute, for her glaucoma which caused her to lose one eye.

Mark Scialdone shared extensive personal memories of touring with Elvy on Hemp Tour in 1993 and 1994. He described her as the grandmother of cannabis who traveled state after state, rally after rally, showing her tin of government joints to audiences. She was originally busted in Hollywood, Florida in 1978 for growing, sparking community support.
