University of Mississippi Cannabis Research

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 054

The University of Mississippi's federally licensed cannabis research program, which has been the sole legal grower of cannabis for research purposes in the United States since the 1960s. The program provides cannabis to patients in the federal Compassionate Investigational New Drug (IND) program and supplies material for NIDA-approved research.

Episode 054 discussed the University of Mississippi program extensively. The panel noted Mississippi had just made medical progress, and the university 'actually' grows the nation's research cannabis. They discussed the Compassionate IND program, where a small number of patients receive pre-rolled joints from the Mississippi facility. One participant mentioned a woman who had been 'getting it from Mississippi' for years through the compassionate use program. The poor quality of the Mississippi research cannabis compared to modern medical products was noted.
