Charas

๐Ÿ”ฅ Culture First mentioned: Ep. 004

Hand-rubbed cannabis resin, traditional to Afghanistan, India, and Nepal. Made by gently rubbing live cannabis flowers between the palms, collecting the sticky trichome resin that transfers to the skin. One of the oldest known forms of cannabis concentrate, predating all mechanical and solvent-based extraction methods. The quality depends entirely on the skill of the maker, the genetics of the plant, and the climate.

Charas appeared in Episode 4 alongside the Babaku poem reading, grounding the discussion in the history of hash making. The panel discussed how charas represents the most direct human-to-plant extraction method โ€” no screens, no water, no solvents, just hands and flowers. The heat and pressure from the palms ruptures trichome heads and transfers the resin to the skin, where it's collected and pressed into balls or sticks. While the method is simple, the quality varies enormously. Traditional charas makers in regions like the Parvati Valley in India or the mountains of Afghanistan develop their technique over years, and the best charas is considered among the finest hash in the world.
