CBN Conversion Process

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 094

A solventless method of converting THC to CBN (cannabinol) using controlled heat, oxygen exposure, and time. Tony Verzura demonstrated converting farmer-grade keef starting at ~300mg/g THCa to ~80mg/g CBN -- approximately 25% molar yield with 75% loss and 15% volume loss. The process requires oxygen (air exchange) for the oxidation of the cyclohexene ring, removing hydrogens to aromatize THC into CBN.

Tony built a heating chamber with oxygen inlet/outlet. No chemicals or solvents used. Product transforms from blonde keef into a red-brown cocoa-like aerated brick. Higher-boiling-point sesquiterpenes (germacrene-D acetate, valencene, guaiol) survive the process while monoterpenes (pinene etc.) boil off. Mark Scialdone explained the chemistry: oxygen reacts with hydrogens on the methyl cyclohexene ring; white smoke = water vapor byproduct. Pure CBN is 90% less psychoactive than THC, primarily sedative/muscle relaxant. Tony pairs CBN with CBD rather than serving alone due to potential adverse effects (sweats, psychosis in some patients).
