Cannabis Substitution Therapy

🩺 Medicine First mentioned: Ep. 219

The use of high-dose cannabis products, particularly edibles and concentrates, to help people reduce or eliminate dependence on harder drugs including opioids, alcohol, and methamphetamine. Multiple studies show opioid overdoses decrease in regions with legal cannabis access.

Jodie Ramsey and others referenced the Vancouver Cannabis Substitution Project (honoring the late Neil Magnus) which provides free or low-cost high-dose edibles and flower to people trying to get off hard drugs. Jodie cited presenting eight meta-analyses to Vancouver city hall proving cannabis access reduces opioid deaths, but officials took no action. Third Eye Organics' representative also shared a story of bringing a fentanyl-using friend to California to replace hard drugs with cannabis.
