Renowned cannabis botanist, author, and ethnobotanist who has spent over 45 years researching cannabis science, history, and culture. Graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a dissertation on the botany and ecology of cannabis (1977), later studied at Indiana University under Malberg. Author of Marijuana Botany (1981), Hashish, and co-author with Mark Merlin of Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany (UC Press). Co-founded the International Hemp Association with David Watson in Amsterdam. Has lived in Amsterdam for nearly 40 years. Currently writing a new book on cannabis botany.
