Ethnobotanist and professor at the University of Hawaii for 51 years (retiring 2025). Author of Man and Marijuana (1972/73, University of Chicago Press) -- the first ethnobotanical study of the cannabis-human relationship, which inspired Robert Connell Clark to write his own dissertation. Also authored On the Trail of the Ancient Opium Poppy for his doctoral degree. Co-authored Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany with Clark (University of California Press). Wrote his bachelor's thesis at UC Santa Barbara at age 28.
