Vacuoles

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 003

Structures found inside trichome gland heads that produce and store terpenes. Located in the lower section of the trichome head, vacuoles work alongside plastids to create the full spectrum of compounds that define a cannabis strain's effects, aroma, and flavour. Their contents are released when the trichome's wax membrane is ruptured.

In Episode 3's trichome anatomy discussion, vacuoles were identified as the terpene-producing structures within gland heads. While plastids in the upper layer handle cannabinoid precursor production driven by UVB light, vacuoles in the lower section are responsible for the terpene profile — the aromatic compounds that give each strain its unique scent and that modulate how cannabinoids interact with the body. The panel noted that understanding this internal structure is key to extraction: rough handling or excessive heat can rupture vacuoles prematurely, releasing terpenes into wash water or the surrounding environment rather than preserving them in the final product. This is why Bubbleman calls the terpene-rich wash water "turp tea."
