THC Boiling Point Misconception

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 056

A widespread error in cannabis industry literature that misquotes the boiling point of THC. The commonly cited figure of ~315 degrees Fahrenheit was actually measured under high vacuum (0.05 mm Hg) during Mechoulam's original distillation isolation of THC. At atmospheric pressure, the true boiling point of THC is significantly higher.

Mark Scialdone corrected the widespread misquoting of THC's boiling point. When Mechoulam isolated THC via distillation, the boiling point was recorded under a strong vacuum pump. High Times, analytical labs, and other industry sources have been perpetuating the vacuum-pressure figure as if it were the atmospheric-pressure boiling point. This matters for understanding what actually happens on a heated nail or in a vaporizer.
