Terpene Rearrangement

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 028

The chemical transformation of one terpene into another when exposed to specific temperatures. For example, pinene and limonene can interchange at certain temperature thresholds, meaning heat does not simply destroy terpenes but can convert them into different terpene compounds with different effects and aromas.

Tony Verzura explained that “pinene and limonene will actually interchange based on temperature. There are actual temperature points in which the terpenes not only degrade but they’ll actually transform into the other element.” This reframed the conversation about terpene preservation: it is not just about preventing loss through evaporation, but about preventing unwanted chemical transformation through careful temperature control.
