Synthetic Cannabinoid Dangers

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 070

Synthetic cannabinoids (like JWH compounds and Spice products) are laboratory-created molecules that bind to cannabinoid receptors but are not thermally stable like natural phytocannabinoids. When heated, they decompose into noxious nitrogen-containing byproducts that cause serious harm and death.

Mark Scialdone explained that most synthetic cannabinoids were invented by John Huffman strictly for lab research, not human consumption. Unlike natural cannabis components which are thermally stable, synthetics containing nitrogen decompose into dangerous products when vaporized. Sam noted Huffman himself was horrified when he learned people were using his compounds recreationally.
