Structural Color

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 239

Color produced by nanostructures that interfere with specific wavelengths of visible light rather than by pigments or dyes. The periodic structures have dimensions resonant with visible light wavelengths (hundreds of nanometers), creating iridescent holographic effects without any chemical colorant.

A scientist guest explained that the nano-printing technique uses silicone stamps to create periodic structures that produce structural color through light diffraction. The technique was originally developed in academic labs for materials science research and is now being proposed for cannabis product authentication.
