Spiking Analysis

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 031

An analytical chemistry technique where a known standard compound is added ('spiked') to a sample to identify unknown peaks in a spectrum. By observing which peaks grow after the addition, analysts can confirm the identity of compounds in the original sample.

Mark Scialdone described spiking analysis in episode 031 when discussing NMR testing of cannabis distillate. He explained that by adding authentic beta-caryophyllene to an NMR tube, 'when you see those peaks growing in then you could identify what peaks correspond to it.'
