Pre-Hybrid Strain History

๐ŸŒฟ Cultivation First mentioned: Ep. 057

The historical progression of cannabis genetics available in the US market from the late 1960s through the 1970s, moving from Mexican and Colombian imports through Thai and eventually to Afghani genetics arriving on the West Coast.

Mel Frank recounts that his first cannabis in 1968 was 'probably just Mexican,' with Colombian arriving a couple years later, then Thai. He didn't encounter Afghan genetics until moving to the West Coast (~1975-76), where Afghani #1 was already being grown in Northern California's Sonoma and Napa counties. The Afghani strains were hybrids that were 'really resinous, looked gorgeous' but many were CBD-rich and didn't get users high, so growers unknowingly eliminated CBD-dominant genetics through selection. Skunkman Sam confirms this selective pressure was largely intentional.
