Nucleation Points

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 028

Small particles or molecular structures in a cannabis extract that serve as seeds for crystal formation. Polar compounds and waxy residues from trichome membranes act as nucleation points, initiating the crystallisation process that leads to “sugaring” or “buttering” in concentrates over time.

Mark Scialdone and Bubbleman discussed how semi-polar and polar molecules from phospholipid membranes likely serve as nucleation points for crystallisation, building on a discussion originally started by Jenn Doe about whether crystallisation in full melt is desirable. The presence of membrane residues in improperly cleaned concentrates accelerates this process.
