// Definition
A portable analytical technique used by Steep Hill Labs that uses near-infrared spectroscopy to compare cannabis samples against a database of cataloged strain profiles, enabling rapid strain identification and quality assessment in the field without full laboratory analysis.
// From the Episode
At the Stepping High Festival in Jamaica, Bubbleman describes how the 'Steep Hill guys were using their new little machine' that functions as a reference system. It compares samples against a database: 'they've cataloged all those different profiles and then they somehow take some type of information from your sample — it's a near, near spectrum, it compares it to all of the things that they have on reference.' Both manual testing and machine testing agreed on the best strain at the competition. Bubbleman acknowledges 'it's not the end but it's the beginning' of portable analytical testing. Mark Scialdone likens it to a portable gas chromatograph but notes it works differently.
