Molecular Sieves in Extraction

๐Ÿ’ง Extraction First mentioned: Ep. 121

Technique of using molecular sieves (desiccant beads that absorb water at the molecular level) placed in extraction chambers to remove moisture from fresh plant material during hydrocarbon extraction. This changes the polarity and hydrophilicity of the mobile phase, preventing fats and waxes from being extracted alongside cannabinoids.

Discussed by the panel as an innovation for live resin production. By eliminating water in the extraction vessel, the solvent preferentially picks up cannabinoids and terpenes while leaving behind lipids. The technique could allow cutting fresh plants directly into extractors with liquid nitrogen, minimizing handling and terpene loss.
