Microplastic Contamination

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 211

The presence of tiny plastic particles or fibers in cannabis extracts, potentially introduced through rosin bag blowouts, water line materials, or other processing equipment. Labs have confirmed finding microplastics in rosin, though routine cannabis testing does not screen for them.

Dr. Mark Scialdone reported that at least one expert testing lab confirmed seeing microplastics in rosin. Colin from Vessel Life Sciences shared a 2017 experience where PVC fibers from their water line contaminated hash all the way through to finished rosin, detectable by taste and under microscope. Kai noted that even without blowouts, collecting rosin from where the bag was pressed can contain visible particles. Multiple panelists agreed this is an under-studied area.
