Marijuana Botany — Book Origins

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 222

Rob Clarke's 1981 book 'Marijuana Botany' published by And/Or Press in Berkeley. Originated when a friend-of-a-friend noticed Clarke's research at the publisher's office and suggested he write a book. Clarke expanded his earlier ecology and botany work, adding extensive illustrations and library research to create the definitive scientific reference on cannabis cultivation.

In the intimate Q&A episode, Clarke explains the book came about through a chance connection — And/Or Press had already published Mel Frank's grower guide. Clarke received an advance and spent time expanding his existing research with more illustrations and deeper library work. The book became one of the most important scientific references for cannabis growers and researchers. Clarke and Chimera (Ryan Lee) discuss how the 1970s cannabis scene was mostly imports with no homegrown — things changed dramatically in the mid-70s onward.
