Japanese Cannabis Prohibition

๐Ÿ”ฅ Culture First mentioned: Ep. 161

Japan maintains some of the world's strictest cannabis laws. Possession of even a gram carries up to 5 years imprisonment, selling up to 7 years with a $20,000 USD fine, and cultivation/commercial sale up to 10 years with a $70,000 USD fine. Cannabis activism and sharing educational information online can result in arrest and 40-day detention without formal charges.

Discussed via guest Karao, a Japanese activist forced to flee to Mexico City. Bubbleman noted the irony that Japanese company Shimadzu manufactures HPLC/GC analytical equipment used worldwide for cannabinoid and terpene testing, yet cannabis remains completely illegal in Japan.
