Homeostasis

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 001

The state of internal balance and stability that the body constantly works to maintain. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is one of the body's primary mechanisms for achieving homeostasis, regulating functions including mood, appetite, pain sensation, immune response, and sleep. Cannabis interacts with the ECS to help restore homeostatic balance when the body's own endocannabinoid production is insufficient.

Homeostasis was introduced in Episode 1 as the fundamental concept underlying the endocannabinoid system. Bubbleman and the panel explained that the ECS doesn't make you "high" — its job is to keep everything in balance. When the body is in pain, the ECS works to reduce it. When inflammation is present, the ECS works to regulate it. Cannabis phytocannabinoids interact with the same CB1 and CB2 receptors that endocannabinoids use, effectively supplementing the body's own regulatory system. This framing — cannabis as a homeostatic support rather than a recreational drug — was presented as the foundational philosophy of Hash Church's approach to the plant.
