Genotype-Phenotype-Chemotype Correlation

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 066

The relationship between a plant's DNA (genotype), its observable physical characteristics (phenotype), and its chemical profile (chemotype). In cannabis, understanding these correlations would allow predicting a plant's cannabinoid and terpene output from its genetic sequence.

Chimera explained that genetics companies can do sequencing but cannot yet tie gene data to phenotype or chemotype data because they lack the ability to grow plants and correlate traits. Environmental stresses change how enzymes are expressed, resulting in different chemical makeups in different strains. This is possible in every other plant but not yet in cannabis due to legal restrictions on research.
