GC Olfactory Port

๐Ÿ”ฅ Culture First mentioned: Ep. 169

A gas chromatograph fitted with a sniff port that allows a human panelist to smell each compound as it elutes off the column, correlating chemical peaks with specific aroma descriptors in real time. Combined with a sulfur chemoluminescence detector, this dual approach can identify aromatically active compounds at concentrations as low as 0.001 parts per trillion.

Nick Ziegler used this at Yakima Chief Hops to discover that some large GC peaks had no detectable aroma (aromatically inactive compounds), while some barely-detectable compounds produced strong peach/apricot aromas. This bidirectional feedback โ€” sensory informing analytical and vice versa โ€” is the foundation of the proposed cannabis sensory science program. Dr. Mark Scialdone emphasized that injection port temperatures (200C) can alter terpene chemistry, changing the profile from what exists at room temperature.
