// Definition
The chemical process of converting CBD isolate to delta-8 THC using acid catalysis. The acid treatment converts CBD to THC in the delta-8 configuration rather than naturally occurring delta-9. The process also 'unzips the molecule,' ripping the terpene portion off the ring and creating olivetolic acid as a byproduct. Independent testing found many delta-8 products contain a 'soup of really nasty chemicals.'
// From the Episode
Dr. Mark Scialdone explained the chemistry. Cannabinoid biosynthesis naturally ends at delta-9 THC — delta-8 is not a product of natural biosynthesis but of synthetic conversion or degradation. Colorado subsequently banned delta-8 products.
