Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome Genetics

🩺 Medicine First mentioned: Ep. 252

Research establishing cannabis hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) as a genetic predisposition rather than caused by neem oil contamination. Dr. Ethan Russo developed a metabolomic screening reducing diagnostic cost from $100K to approximately $1K, confirming heart-related connections.

Review paper by Ethan Russo et al. debunked neem oil theory. Very rare disorder affecting few thousand people. Dr. Russo compared neem toxicity to CHS symptoms and found completely different pathways. CHS appears in regulated markets worldwide (not geographically clustered). Only treatment is cessation. Six confirmed US deaths. Caleb/ATN noted we can no longer say cannabis has never killed anyone.
