Clarke and Merlin met 19 years before the episode through their respective academic work (Clarke's 'Botany and Ecology of Cannabis' at UC Santa Cruz, Merlin's 'Man and Marijuana' at UC Santa Barbara). Half the 700+ citations came during the latter half of the project. Clarke described it as the potential required reading for future college cannabis courses. He expressed interest in developing a simplified curriculum from it.
